Arches National Monument is known for it's sweltering heat. Names given to several rock formations reference Hell as ones geographic location.
The fire rages in the dark night as the drums ( in their forgotten language ) remind us of our connection to each other. Out of the smoke the medicine returns.

Numerous sandstone formations populate Arches National Monument.
The day was windy and hot. The air was filled with dust so much so as to color the sky an orangish yellow hue. The oil pastels were sweating in the heat and easily spread upon the support as they practically melted as they were being applied.
I drew this on location and added the pastel color to it in the studio.
It was a windy day when I worked this out on location. I see birds and animals in the shadows. Sound fills the air and influences the visual field.

The Pedernal looks somewhat ominous with the sun setting in all the smoke.
Sometimes the landscape is only the starting point of a painting. The finished art work might have more to do with another subject. Abstraction speaks another language or speaks to a different part of our brain. Distortions in the visual field cause change within the interpretative faculty. The appearance of the world will change as the veil between the quantum world and our daily world are dissolved.

The month of October is a beautiful month in New Mexico. The cottonwoods of the Rio Chama valley light up in a display of autumn color even the distant Jemez mountains glow upon the horizon.
